My work is created using stippling, a technique dating back to the 16th century that uses thousands of carefully placed dots to build tone, texture, and depth. The closer and denser the dots, the darker the image appears. My interest in this method was influenced by studying Graphic Design at Plymouth Art College and Falmouth College of Arts, where I learned about traditional printing processes and halftone imagery.
Since graduating from Falmouth College of Arts in 1994, I have worked in the design and print industry, as well as painting large-scale stage and theatre backdrops. I currently work as a graphic designer in Plymouth.
Drawing has been a lifelong passion, but it was in 2014 that I became fully immersed in stippling. I was drawn to its ability to capture fine detail and texture, and over time I developed a process focused on quality rather than speed. My aim is to create images that transcend the individual dots, revealing the intricate beauty of feathers, fur, and other natural forms.
Each piece is highly detailed and typically requires 80 hours or more to complete and is created using Copic Multiliner pens (0.03, 0.05, and 0.1) on 250gsm fine-grain, acid-free paper.
